Company goes Cold on Storage Plans
Amersham Health, now part of global giant GE Healthcare, pioneered
the development and production of in-vivo imaging enhancing agents
for medical diagnosis.
These are produced at GE Healthcare’s site in Gloucester.
The highly precise manufacturing requirements included storage
of both raw materials and finished products between +5 degrees and
-20 degrees depending on the constituents and manufacturing techniques.
The company recognised that a specialist solution would be needed
to provide a storage system that would operate at these temperatures
and that would also fulfil the requirements of storage and retrieval.
Rackline, specialists in bespoke storage solutions was invited
to develop a practical solution to the problem of accommodating
full height roll cages with loads of up to 150kg.
Due to the low temperature it was important to provide a system
which enabled access to every roll cage without the need to move
those which would be in front of the desired cage. With this criteria
and the obvious need to maximise the use of the space within the
Cold Stores, a mobile system was the only practical solution
Another consideration for Rackline was to design moveable storage
areas that could be wheeled out into other parts of the site without
the operator being either endangered or put under any undue physical
effort.
Rackline designed a modified version of their Multitrak mobile
base that would move on tracks chased into the insulated floor.
These mobiles compact so the number of aisles required to access
into them is greatly reduced compared to static bases.
Roll cages were designed to sit on top of the mobile bases. These
each had four swivel castor wheels to allow them to be pulled off
the base (via a small ramp) and pushed around and out into other
areas of the site.
A tray-like hinged flap on the bottom bay of each aisle retains
the roll cages on the bases.
The roll cages constructed from 50 x 50 mm mesh were 2000mm x 800mm
x 800mm with adjustable shelving and a lockable swing front door
and a lidded top.
All in all 158 roll cages were accommodated in three Cold Store
rooms.
